Welcome to the Imperial Polk County Astronomical Society website! Our Astronomy Night this month will be at Colt Creek State Park on November 10th. The presentation will start at 7:00 pm, rain or shine. Since we’re under cover, don’t let the weather stop you from coming out for a great night of wishing upon the stars.

Our presentation will be an educational “Tonight Show”, AKA: “What’s Up Tonight?”. We’ll show you on the screen what’s observable on that night (known as “eye candy”) and give you some facts about each celestial object. You know, what it is, how far away it is, its name if it has one, or its number. But don’t fret, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet, because we know everyone wants to get outside and see the real thing. I mean, pictures are nice, and the information is educational and interesting, but the real joy is seeing the real thing.

So, come out and get to know us. Don’t forget, “We bring the universe to you”.

Just a reminder: We start at 7:00 pm. For safety reasons, the park gates close at 8:00 pm.

In case you missed us in October in Bartow, our first Bartow Friday Fest Sidewalk Astronomy was a success. We were able to view the Moon and several of our solar system planets.

So, what is sidewalk astronomy? Sidewalk astronomy is no more than amateur astronomers, like us, setting up our telescopes in a public place (like on a busy sidewalk) and letting anyone who comes by look through the scopes at whatever we find in the night sky to see. We answer any questions about astronomy and the celestial objects we’re viewing.

Our purpose is to educate anyone interested in the basics of astronomy, let them see the wonders of the universe and hopefully, find a few new amateurs who may want to join us.

So come on out to Bartow, visit the many vendors there to see what they have to offer and visit us and see the universe up close. It will be an experience you won’t forget. See you there.

So why the name “Imperial”? That goes back to the early years of our home, Polk County, Florida. At one time, Polk County boasted more paved roads than anywhere else in the southeast U.S., hence the “Imperial” moniker. It was probably more of a P.R. thing than anything else, but the name has stuck. We are still officially known as “Imperial Polk County,” and are proud of our heritage. If you look alongside several of the old roads crossing the county line, you can still see some of the old county line markers that were installed in the 1930’s.
